Tiny House Plans On Wheels – Designing a tiny house on wheels is both challenging and fun. You have Department of Transportation requirements for height and width, limited square footage, and you’re trying to accommodate key functions, systems, assets, and make them versatile and flexible over time.

It’s a lot to handle! That’s why we sell tiny houses designed for real customers and built in the real world. Many people do not want to start from scratch, especially when it comes to the strength of the structure itself, such as walls and roofs, insulation and weatherproofing.

Just as painting a room can make all the difference in how you like it, you’d be surprised how different a small house design can be when you make different aesthetic choices. You can go from “cabin” to “modern” in a heartbeat – switch out the pine paneling for a solid color. When you first notice what you like and don’t like in other tiny houses, it’s hard to see past the colors and finishes that dominate the space or make it “pop.”

We’ve found a simple, fun and useful tool to see how different finishes and hardware can make a design unique and personalized. TruForm Tiny builds custom tiny houses with a couple of basic designs. They have a very easy online tool to walk you through some of the basic material, hardware, and design options to see what they look like, as well as the costs associated with those options. If you only have five minutes to explore your tiny house design options, I can’t think of a better way to spend it. Check out their “design your own” environment here.

People often ask us to do certain types of design on our small house plan sets, such as lengthening or shortening the design. Such changes are not that hard, but it can be scary for novice builders to go “off script” and modify an existing design. And since most of our plans are PDF only, these changes require manually redrawing the plans, or securing the “wings” as they are built.

But one of our most popular sets of tiny house plans – the Cider Box Tiny House – also comes with a very helpful and editable SketchUp model option! Jake from the Tiny Nest Project is a SketchUp wizard, and he worked with Shelter Wise, the original designer and builder of the Cider Box, to make this blueprint-fulfilling PDF model. Jake made an awesome video to demonstrate the Cider Box SketchUp model as a way to illustrate the power and usefulness of SketchUp as a tool in general, and you really just have to watch it as an educational exercise:

We met Jake in part because he worked with our friend Rob at Iron Eagle Trailers to make 3-D modeled versions of the Iron Eagle PAD Series Trailers in all lengths – Dee from PAD and Derin from Shelter Wise helped design the trailer! Jake offers all of these SketchUp models on his website

The tricky part is learning how to use SketchUp enough to use them… and then putting together a complete design for a tiny house. For $30, Jake’s SketchUp Tutorial teaches you how to use it as he works with his Iron Eagle models, Cider Box models, and more. Can you try and learn SketchUp for free on the Internet? Of course, but Jake’s tutorial is specific to tiny houses on wheels, and teaches you how to use his other very useful models. SketchUp files and file creators are not created equal, and people use the program in very different ways. We recommend Jake’s tutorial and patterns because he’s very organized, a great communicator, and works with the same trailer base that makes our Cider Box Tiny House, Hikari Box Tiny House, and Bunk Box Tiny House.

Ability to build Our friend Candice, who built her own tiny house with no construction experience, learned how to design a tiny house on SketchUp first and gave her the confidence that she could do it. He could see how each piece fit together in the 3-D model, so he knew how they would fit together in real life; the only difference was “adding screws”.

Or as Jake puts it, “You can do a virtual build and really see every step of the process, and how it’s all going to fit together, and how you plan to make it happen… It’s great to experiment, make mistakes, and undo them without breaking the bank. » Anyone who has been swinging hammers in real life knows how nice a bug-free environment is!
