Finding plans to build a house with the mother-in-law seemed impossible. Despite searching countless websites, we struggled to find a house plan that suited us and our mother-in-law.

There are many plans for a mother-in-law with one bedroom. However, there are not many who have an entire apartment for the mother. And one room just doesn’t cut it for us.

When we decided to move in together, my mother-in-law and I agreed that we needed separate spaces. He is younger than your parents, so our needs are different. He wants his own space, like a small house.
So how do we find the perfect plan? And how do you find a plan that’s right for you? Today I’m going to share how we find the perfect plan for a mother-in-law house.
First, you may ask what is a booklet home builder? They are the people you see building neighborhoods full of homes in your area. Some of these are national companies like Ryan Homes, while others are more local to a state or two. I also call them basic or cookie cutter builders.
New Home Floor Plans With In Law Suites
The problem with standard tract home builder plans is that most are not available by law. Most of them have two master suites and they think that is enough. So if a small bedroom on the main level just won’t cut it, what will?
Ask them if you can add them. Don’t be afraid to ask, you’d be surprised how many builders only start building certain plans, don’t mind if you add to the plan. They only require the basic house plan to be one of their own.
In our experience, the two main builders we spoke to were open to adding a rulebook to us. One of them had previously joined the court session. We were impressed that they were both willing to work with us to create a place where they could work. What is the difference between working with a mainstream builder and a custom builder? Now, we’ve talked to several other cookie makers and they don’t put extra space beyond their standard ones. It’s worth calling some of the builders who are actually building teams and seeing if they’ll work with you. And if you can do it in their own neighborhood, they are already building, even better!

That’s what we did when we built our house. So, if your builder asks you for some plans to show what you like, look for them!
What Is A Mother In Law Suite, And Should I Consider Adding One?
There are great websites with plans that you can buy or in my case use as inspiration for your own plan. Here are my favorite websites for finding house plans.
If you’re like us and need a home with a courtroom, be prepared, when you search for a law suite, you’ll often find single bedrooms, courtrooms with basements, or courtrooms. you can. garage (does not work for many families). It might work for most of you! But that was not what we wanted.
I’m only showing you two sites because most floor websites are very similar to each other. So don’t spend a lot of time searching multiple sites to find the same house plans. Do yourself a favor and find a pair you like and just stick with them.
Traditional House Plan
These are my favorite floor plans of all time. Many of their floors have pictures of ready-made houses. I have a folder full of pictures of their finished floor plans as inspiration for our house. If you are looking for a legal package, their advanced search allows you to select a legal package. They have a ranch plan, which I love, but it was too wide for our lot, and it still needed some readjustment.
EPlans is a great option for house plans. Like architectural designs, it has an option for advanced search and you can select in the right set. But, like most floors, this only means one bedroom.
This is the route we went and is ideal for most people who live with in-laws. Our home builder worked with us to build a custom home plan. They asked us to find some house plans as inspiration and then they used one of our plans as a starting point to build a house for us.

Some builders will sit down, take all your ideas, and then draw up a plan (or two) for you to choose from. Others use a plan like ours as a starting point. Whatever method the builder uses, just make sure it works for you and you’ll get what you want.
Like most people, I am a people pleaser. This means that it is difficult for me to defend myself. And designing a home was no different. My husband had to keep reminding me to speak up and speak up so that I could get what I wanted. So what do we want when we search?

Mother In Law Suites: A Growing Trend Among Baby Boomers
I have marked the mother-in-law set to distinguish the two sides. Once we move in, our mudroom is set up in a cubicle or closet style. Yes, those are the very long cupboards in our kitchen and morning room. We’re not exactly sure about our appliances (double wall ovens and huge range), so our kitchen plan isn’t set yet.
Developing your own plan can be very exciting. For inspiration, first look at different house plans and pictures. Go to open houses and model homes and discuss what you like and don’t like about a home.
Cut out magazine clippings, save images from Pinterest or Instagram, and more. One builder we talked to creates a Pinterest group where you can use all of your design inspiration photos as inspiration for your own designs (how cool is that? ?)

If you are going to do something big like building a private house, make sure you get what you want. This is not a process you want to rush—the last thing you want is to end up in the middle and regret not taking more time to create the plans that work best for your family.

When I look at new homes, especially those created by super organized individuals, one thing always strikes me…… Why does everyone put the laundry room in the wrong place? I know I can already hear a lot of people thinking – what? Is there a “right” and “wrong” place for a laundry room? In the mudroom where it belongs! Maybe. Then again, maybe not! Where do people change their dirty clothes from the day? Usually in the bedrooms or in the bathroom closest to it. Not only are all the bedrooms off the laundry, but they are also on another story of the house. So you spend hours of your life carrying clothes and bedding up and down the stairs and around the house. It may not seem like much now, but when you’re in your 60s, 70s, 80s, I imagine it will be a lot harder! I’m sure you had a point, and so did I
