It seemed impossible to come up with plans for a house with her mother-in-law. Despite searching countless websites, we struggled to find a house plan that worked for us and our mother-in-law.

There are many plans with a bedroom for the mother-in-law. However, there are few who have an entire flat for a mother in law. And a room wouldn’t cut it for us.

When we decided to build a house together, my mother-in-law and I agreed that we needed separate spaces. She’s younger than your average parent who moved into a mother-in-law, so our needs are different. It wants its own space, like a tiny house.
So how did we find the perfect plan? And how can you find a plan that works for you? Today, I’m sharing how we came up with the perfect plan for a house with a mother in law office.
First, what’s a way home builder you might ask? They are the people you see building neighborhoods full of houses in your area. Some are national companies like Ryan Homes, others are more local to just one or two states. I also call them mainstream or cookie cutter creators.
Country Style House Plan
The problem with home builders’ standard plans is that most of them aren’t in law offices. Many will have two master suites and they think that’s enough. So what should you do if a small bedroom on the main floor isn’t going to cut it?
Ask if you can add it. Don’t be afraid to ask, you’d be surprised how many builders are committed to just building certain plans, it’s okay to add to the plan. They just want the basic house plan to be theirs.
In our experience, two of the mainstream builders we spoke to were open to us adding a law office. One of them even added it to a law suite before. We were surprised that they were both willing to work with us to create a space that would work. What’s the benefit of going with a “mainstream” renderer versus a custom renderer? Often their price per square meter is less. (see here why we chose not to go with them).
Bedroom Country Style Home With In Law Suite
Now, we’ve talked to a few other cookie cutter makers and they haven’t left any additional space outside of their standard plugins. It would be really helpful to call some builders who are already building communities and see if they will work with you. And if you can do this in the neighborhoods they’ve already built, even better!

That’s what we did when we were building our house. So if your builder is asking you for some plans to show you what you love, go look for it!

There are some great websites that you can purchase or, in my case, use as inspiration for your own plan. Here are some of my favorite websites for finding house plans.
If you are like us and need a house with a law office, be prepared so that most of the time when you choose the law office during the search, be prepared that most of the time you will encounter single bedrooms, basement law offices or law offices. a garage (useless for many families). This might work for many of you! But that was not what we personally wanted.
I’m only showing you two sites because most floor plan websites have a lot of overlap. So don’t waste too much time searching multiple sites to find the same house plans. Do yourself a favor and find a couple you love and just stick with them.
Maria Floor Plan, 3 Bed/2 Bath Home
This is my all time favorite place for floor plans. Most floor plans have pictures of finished homes. I have a folder full of images from finished floor plans to serve as inspiration for our home. If you are looking for a law suite, the advanced search lets you choose the law suite. They actually have plans for a farm with a law room which I love but it was too large for our space and still needed some remodeling.
EPlans is a great option for home plans. Just like Architectural Designs, it has an advanced search option and you can choose in law office. However, as with most floor plans, this only means one bedroom.
That’s the way we’re going, and for most people it’s ideal for building a home with a mother in law office. Our home builder worked with us to create a custom home plan. They asked us to come up with some house plans for inspiration and then used one of our plans as a starting point to design a custom house for us.
Five Bedroom Modern Farmhouse With In Law Suite
Some builders will sit down and take all your ideas and then draw you a plan (or two) to choose from. Others will use a plan like ours as a starting point. Whatever method the builder uses, make sure it works for you and you get what you want.
Like many people, I am a people pleaser. This means I have a hard time standing up for myself. And designing a home was no different. My husband had to remind me to voice my opinion and speak up to get exactly what I wanted. So what did we want when we were looking for it?
After going back and forth a lot with our builders, my husband, my mother-in-law, and myself, here is our final plan for a home with a mother-in-law. I have removed all the dimensions to protect the design from our builders for the pictures. All plans are copyrighted by Castle Rock Builders and use of blueprints is prohibited. House With Mother In Law Suite
I’ve outlined the mother-in-law to help separate the two sides. When we move there will be small or closet style built-ins in our muddy area. And yes, this is one of those very tall cabinets in our kitchen and in our morning room. We’re not entirely sure about our appliances (huge range against double wall ovens) so our kitchen plan isn’t final yet.
Designing your own plan can be exciting but overwhelming. Be sure to first look at the various plans and pictures of the houses for inspiration. Open and model houses and discuss what you like and dislike in a house.
Cut magazine clippings, save pictures from Pinterest or Instagram, etc. A creator we spoke to creates a Pinterest group board where you can pin all your design inspiration photos for them to use as inspiration for your design (how amazing is that??)

If you’re doing something as big as building a custom house, make sure you get what you want. It’s not a process you want to rush through – the last thing you want is to be moderate and regret not taking more time to create plans that will work best for your family.

I really enjoy reading all your posts and this one is no exception! Now that you have passed through these stages, you will be able to answer a question that has been on my mind for years. When I look at new homes, especially homes designed by highly organized people, something always puzzles me…. Why does everyone misplace the laundry room? I know, I can already hear a lot of people thinking – What? Is there a “right” and a “wrong” place for a laundry room? In the mud room where it belongs! Maybe. Then again maybe not! Where do people change their dirty clothes during the day? Usually in bedrooms or in the bathroom closest to it. All bedrooms are not just far from the laundry room, they are in a different story of the house. So you will spend hours of your life carrying clothes and bedding up and down the stairs and through the house. It may not seem like much now, but I imagine it would be tough when you’re 60, 70, 80! I’m sure you had logic and I felt sure
