I would like to share with you some methods and options. I’ll break it down into three schematic design concepts.

In this option, the first floor is given to mom or dad. A large bedroom with a closet usually includes a sitting area, an ADA private bathroom and an exterior entrance to this space. Mom or Dad will share the kitchen and laundry facilities in the main house. We like to insulate this area from the rest of the house and provide a separate heating zone for this section of the house. Elderly people often have different temperature preferences than in younger ages. We would also like to add some highlighting in this space. This option is the least expensive and in many respects is not much different than any other single family home.
This option has a larger and smaller kitchen, living room, separate bedroom, walk-in closet, and ADA bathroom. Sometimes the bedroom is connected to the main house through a laundry room. This space can then be used by both residences. With a separate entrance, the apartment gives the resident greater autonomy. The diagram below shows this arrangement. Please note that this family also needs to accommodate two teenage boys. To do this, we completed the top level with a well-insulated music room and bedrooms.
