House Plans With In Law Suite – On the rise for several years, in-law suites have redefined the concept of co-living for the modern family. These “houses-within-a-house” are stylish accommodations for in-laws, returning children or overnight/weekend guests. In addition, they come in all shapes and sizes – from a studio apartment in the garage to a master bedroom on the first floor, a renovated basement, or a tiny cottage in the main living space.
This spacious one bedroom garage apartment is an attractive option as a guest house or suite for an older child or in-laws. It includes a full bathroom, kitchen and living room. (View this program #196-1049)
House Plans With In Law Suite
Before the boom years of the post-war era, it was not uncommon for at least two generations to live in the same house. During the prosperous times of the late 1940s and 1950s, children left the family home to pursue career opportunities. During the decades that followed, everyone lived in their own home; and hosted family members for the short overnight visit or the odd vacation.

Today, some families are going back to the pre-war years and renovating/decorating their homes to welcome grown children back or to host their elderly parents or in-laws. An uncertain economy and a desire to help with nursing problems are the reasons for this change in family life arrangements.
Over the past few years there has been a surge in the construction of houses with hot suites. These homes may include a garage apartment, master suite renovation and a finished basement with its own private entrance. In other cases, a tiny cottage – with a bedroom, kitchenette/breakfast area, bathroom and living area – that fits perfectly into the yard of the main residence – is a very attractive choice.
A one-story, three-bedroom home, equipped with plenty of room for expansion. A bonus room or basement can be remodeled to accommodate returning children, elderly parents or in-laws. (Show program no. 109-1086)
Ranch Style House Plan
A master suite – with its own bathroom and sitting area – on the main level of this two-story home can be converted into a ranch suite. Conveniently located close to the kitchen, dining, living room areas, this is the only bedroom on the first floor and therefore, ensures privacy for tenants. With all these options, families paint a modern “together but apart” family picture. Parents, children and in some cases also grandparents live in the same complex, with the desired privacy for everyone to live their lives independently and at the same time, maintain close ties – and “shouting distance” with relatives.
If you are seriously considering asking your in-laws or elderly parents to move into your home, the first step is to assess your available space and the best options for them. Can you expand to provide an additional suite on the first floor – perhaps renovate or remodel an additional bedroom on the main level?

For seniors, a first floor room or finished basement is the top choice. A garage studio works better for returning kids. No matter what accommodations you decide on, make the room spacious, relaxing, and most importantly, accessible to the kitchen, dining, and living room areas.
The two-story, four-bedroom house plan includes plenty of unfinished space that could be used for a master suite. The basement – with its own entrance – has a good sized bedroom suite, with full bath and linen closet. The family room and another bedroom are also in the basement. (Show program no. 158-1193)
The ultimate goal of the in-law package is for families to help each other – whether it’s in long-term care, or whether it’s a temporary financial setback – and exist together under one roof while maintaining their privacy and space. With that in mind, here are some features to consider when incorporating the in-law suite into your home plan.
Homes With Mother In Law Suites
The one-story, three-bedroom country house plan includes a custom-made master suite—with its own bathroom and living room. (Program No. 126-1089)
A comfortable master suite on the first floor makes it easy for elderly parents or in-laws to move around the house. The proximity of the suite to the “social” spaces – kitchen, living, dining areas – must be an important part of the design plan.
Nothing guarantees more privacy than a suite with its own bathroom/shower and sitting area. Most designers and homeowners choose a shower rather than a bathtub – if the bathroom is intended for an elderly person. Bath grab bars can be installed to help navigate the bathroom and minimize the risk of slipping or falling.
Different Types Of In Law Suites You Can Add To Your House Or Property
A master bathroom with a tub and shower can be made more senior-friendly by installing safety grab bars on the walls, sides of the shower, and inside the shower itself. (View Floor Plan #126-1289) You can search for more Hot Suite house plans here.
A basement apartment or first floor bedroom with a separate entrance gives tenants the freedom to follow their own schedule and do things on their own.
In some cases, the in-laws may want to prepare their own food and dine in the privacy of their “apartment”. A kitchenette unit with a microwave and a breakfast nook can be welcome additions to the in-law suite.

Mother In Law Suites And Apartments
Finding plans for a house with a mother-in-law package felt impossible. Despite searching countless websites, we struggled to find a house plan that worked for us and our in-laws.
There are lots of plans that have one bedroom for mother-in-law. But, not many have an entire apartment for their mother-in-law. And one room just won’t cut it for us.
When we decided to build a house together, my mother-in-law and I agreed that we needed separate spaces. She is younger than your average parent who moves into a farm parcel so our needs are different. She wants her own space that is like a little house.

So how did we find the perfect plan? And how can you find a program that suits you? Today I’m sharing how we find the perfect plan for a home with a mother-in-law package.
First, what is a felony home builder you may ask? They are the people you see building neighborhoods full of houses in your area. Some are national companies like Ryan Homes, others are more local to just a state or two. I also refer to them as mainstream builders or cookie cutters.
The problem with standard home builder plans is that they usually don’t have legal packages. Many of them will have two master suites and feel that this is enough. So what are you supposed to do if a small bedroom on the main level just isn’t going to cut it?

Ask them if you can add. Don’t be afraid to ask, you’ll be surprised how many builders are meant to build only certain plans, they don’t care if you add to the plan. They only require that the home base plan be one of their own.
In our experience, two of the mainstream builders we spoke with were open to us putting together an addition to the package. One of them even added a mother-in-law package in the past. We were surprised that they were both willing to work with us to create a space that would work. What is the advantage of going with a “mainstream” builder versus a custom builder? Many times their price per square meter is lower. (See why we chose not to go with them here).
Now, we’ve talked to some other cookie-cutter builders and they don’t put any additional space other than their standard additions. You should really call some builders who are already building communities and see if they will work with you. And if you can do it within their neighborhoods they are already building, even better!

The next option is to find your own floor plan and take it to your builder. Read more about the custom home building process here and when it’s time to start looking at floor plans.
This is what we did in building our house. So if your contractor asks you for some plans to show them what you like, go for it!
There are some amazing websites with plans that you can purchase or in my case, use as inspiration for your own plan. Here are some of my favorite sites for finding house plans.
