There are many plans for a mother-in-law with one bedroom. But there aren’t many people who have an entire apartment for mom in a suite. And one room just won’t cut it for us.

When we decided to build a house together, my mother-in-law and I agreed that we need separate land. He’s younger than your average parent, so our needs are different. He wants his own space, like a small house.
So how did we find the perfect plan? How can you find the plan that’s right for you? Today I’m sharing how to find the perfect floor plan for a house with a mother-in-law.
First, you may ask, what is a house builder in a tract? They are the people you see building neighborhoods full of houses in your area. Some of these are national companies, such as Ryan Homes, while others are local to a state or two. I also call them basic or cookie cutter builders.

The problem with tract home builders’ standard plans is that most law firms don’t have them. Most of them have two master suites and they think that is enough. So what if a small main level bedroom just doesn’t cut it?
Ask if they can be included. Don’t be afraid to ask, you’d be surprised how many builders just start building certain plans, don’t mind adding to the plans. They only require that the basic house plan be one of their own.
In our experience, two major builders we spoke with were willing to implement a legal suite. One of them previously joined a law firm. We were amazed that they were willing to work with us to create a space where they could both work. What are the benefits of working with a “primary” builder and client? They often have a low price per square foot. (see here why we chose not to go with them).

Now, we’ve talked to a few cookie cutter builders and they don’t put any additional space beyond their standard add-ons. You should call some of the builders who are already building communities and see if they will work with you. If you can do it in their neighborhoods, they are already building, even better!

Don’t Just Build: Design Your Mother In Law Apartment With Style And Flair
There are amazing websites with plans that you can buy or in my case use as inspiration for your own plan. Here are some of my favorite websites for finding house plans.
If you’re like us and need a home with an in-law suite, be prepared that when you’re looking for an in-law suite, you’ll often end up with single bedrooms, basement in-law suites, or in-law suites. garage (doesn’t work for many families). This may work for many of you! But it was not what we personally wanted.
I’m only showing you two sites because most floor plan websites have a lot of overlap. So don’t spend a lot of time searching multiple sites to find the same house plans. Do yourself a favor and find a pair you like and only stick with them.
New Home Floor Plans With In Law Suites
This is my favorite place for floor plans. Many of their floor plans include pictures of finished homes. I have a folder full of pictures of their finished floor plans as inspiration for our home. If you are looking for a legal collection, their advanced search will allow you to select a legal collection. They have a ranch plan with an in-law suite that I love, but it was too spacious for our lot and it still needed a little reconfiguration.
EPlans is a great option for house plans. Like architectural design, it has an advanced search feature and you can choose from a legal collection. But, like most floor plans, this only means one bedroom.
This is the path we’ve taken and is perfect for most people building a house with an in-law. Our home builder worked with us to create a custom home plan. They asked us to find house plans as inspiration and then they used one of our plans as a starting point to design a custom home for us.

Some builders will sit down and take all your ideas and then draw you a plan (or two) to choose from. Others, like us, use a plan as a starting point. Whatever method the builder uses, make sure it works for you and you get what you want.
Like most people, I am a people pleaser. This means that it is difficult for me to defend myself. And the design of the house was not unique. In order for me to get what I wanted, my husband had to constantly remind me to speak up and speak up. So what was our desire when we searched?

I have described the mother-in-law suite to help you differentiate between the two sides. Once we move in, the mudroom is set up cubicle or closet style. Yes, it’s the same type of cabinets in the kitchen and morning room. We’re not quite sure about our appliances (double wall ovens and large range), so the kitchen plan isn’t quite set yet.
While creating your own plan is fun, it can also be overwhelming. For inspiration, first look at different house plans and pictures. Visit open houses and model homes and discuss what you like and don’t like about a home.
Clip out magazine clippings, save images from Pinterest or Instagram, etc. One builder we talked to creates a Pinterest board where you can pin all of your design inspiration photos to use as inspiration for your designs (how cool is that? ?)

If you’re doing something big, like building a custom home, make sure you get what you want. This is not a process you want to rush—the last thing you want to do is end up mediocre and regret not taking more time to come up with plans that work well for your family.

I enjoy reading all of your posts and this one is no exception! Now that you’ve gone through these steps, you can answer a question that’s been bothering me for years. When I look at new homes, especially those built by very organized people, there is one thing that always strikes me……Why does everyone put the laundry room in the wrong place? I know, I can already hear a lot of people thinking – What? Is there a “right” and “wrong” place for a laundry room? Right there in the mudroom where he belongs! Maybe. Then again, it’s impossible! Where do people change their dirty clothes during the day? Usually their bedroom or the bathroom next to it. All of the bedrooms are not just off the laundry room, but on another story of the house. So you spend hours of your life carrying clothes and bedding up the stairs and through the house. It may not seem like much now, but I imagine it will be difficult when you are 60, 70, 80 years old! I’m sure you have a point, and so did I
