Bedroom Apartment/house Plans
The layout is mostly one open space with a kitchen and living-dining area connecting to a large wrap-around deck, as shown here (all photos in this post by Michael Dean, courtesy of Nir Pearlson). Pearlson explains that he designed the house as a series of roughly 12-inch-square modules that fit together to form the main living space. Key elements (such as the window seat with storage drawers, shown below left) define individual “rooms” without separating them from each other, making the main space appear larger than it is. An integrated platform and top beam frame the window seat as a separate space without separating it from the larger space.
The kitchen peninsula (warm-toned granite) serves a similar function as the central wood-burning stove on a slate tray. Natural painted plaster wall finishes, red oak floors and Douglas fir and hemlock trim add visual warmth. Pearlson designed the house to be as energy-efficient as possible, with rigid foam insulation in the walls and a roof that houses individual photovoltaic arrays—larger ones for generating electricity and smaller ones for heating water. Another Pearlson design, this 800-square-foot, two-story home doubles as a backyard cottage. It has two bedrooms on the lower level, while the kitchen and living room are located on the floor above and open to a charming veranda. Although the cottage shown here is stuck at the toe of a slope, this design can easily be adapted to other site conditions.
