This usually involves filling out a simple form that provides documentation that your house plans are compliant.
In some regions, there’s a second step you’ll need to take to make sure your house plans comply with local laws. Some areas of North America have very strict engineering requirements. Examples of this would be, but not limited to, the earthquake prone areas of California and the Pacific coast, hurricane risk areas on the Florida, Gulf and Carolina coasts. New York, New Jersey, Nevada and parts of Illinois also require a review by a local professional. If you are building in these areas, you will most likely need to hire a state-licensed structural engineer to analyze the design and provide additional drawings and calculations required by your building department. If you’re not sure, building departments usually have materials they’ll give you listing all the things they need to submit and get a building permit.
In addition, stock plans do not have a professional stamp attached to them. If your building department requires it, they will only accept a stamp from a professional licensed in the state where you plan to build.
