Many areas now have area-specific energy codes that must also be adhered to. This usually involves filling in a simple form to confirm that your home plans are compliant.
Some regions require a second step to ensure your house plans meet local codes. Some areas of North America have very strict engineering requirements. Examples of these would include, but are not limited to, the earthquake-prone areas of California and the Pacific coast, and the hurricane-prone areas of Florida, the Gulf Coast, and the Carolinas. New York, New Jersey, Nevada and parts of Illinois also require a local professional to review. If you are building in these zones, you will likely need to hire a state-licensed structural engineer to analyze the project and provide additional drawings and calculations needed by your building department. If you’re not sure, building departments usually have a handout that lists all the items that need to be submitted and obtained a building permit.

If your building department requires it, they will only accept a professional stamp that is licensed in the state where you plan to build.
